Do you know the different types of acne? Understanding the different types will help when deciding the type of products to use.
Blackhead - an open pore which is blocked by sebum. Dead skin cells block pore and oxidise.
Whitehead - A closed pore which is clogged with sebum.
Pustules - Appears yellow or white with redness and filled with pus
Cystic - Swollen, red and itchy bumps filled with pus. Inflamed and painful.
Hormonal - Cystic or papules which appear on chin, jaw line and mouth area
Papules - Pink or red bumps that are tender to touch, caused by bacteria under the skin's surface
Most over-the-counter products that are meant for acne treatment or acne skin will contain ingredients such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and benzoyl peroxide. Retinoids can also help to unclog pores and clear up acne.
Some products may work for others but not your skin. Hence, it takes time to see which works best for you and that's ok!
As a general rule of thumb, always remember to wash your face (double cleanse if you wear makeup!) at the end of each day.
Incorporate a gentle scrub and clay mask to exfoliate your skin once weekly will help to unclog any dead skin cells in the pores. And yes, resist the urge to pick the zits to prevent further inflammation! 😉
